Google Cloud Build Cost: Estimate CI/CD Build Minutes

Start with builds per month × average build duration. Cloud Build charges while a build is in process, bills partial minutes by the actual seconds used, and does not charge build-minutes while a build is queued. Apply the current per-minute rate for the machine type, region, and default or private pool instead of using one global rate.

Treat the monthly free build-minute allowance carefully: Google documents it as a promotional allowance tied to the e2-standard-2 machine type in the default pool, and it can change. Confirm the current pricing page before budgeting, then calculate paid minutes only after the applicable allowance.

Separate pull-request builds, branch pushes, releases, scheduled builds, and retries. For each group, record runs per month, median and slow-build duration, and machine type. A larger worker can cost more per minute but may reduce total minutes, so compare measured cost per completed build rather than machine price alone.

Use trigger filters to avoid duplicate or irrelevant builds, keep dependency and Docker layer caches effective, and run independent steps in parallel when the critical path becomes shorter. Do not assume every optimization saves money: measure duration before and after with comparable workloads and include failed or retried builds.

The worker bill is not always the full CI/CD cost. Add extra SSD beyond the included amount, Artifact Registry storage, build-log storage or ingestion, and applicable network or peered-network charges. Private pools can scale to zero, but their machine, region, storage, and network configuration still determines the price of active builds.

Export or review build history monthly and group duration by trigger and status. Investigate the slowest recurring path first, set a billing budget, and verify rates against the current official Cloud Build pricing page because machine availability, regional pricing, and free allowances can change.
