Google Cloud Monitoring Cost: Metrics, Prometheus, and Checks

Estimate Google Cloud Monitoring cost from chargeable metric ingestion, Prometheus samples, uptime checks, synthetic monitors, and API queries.

Separate free Google Cloud metrics from chargeable metrics

Start with the Metrics Management page and group usage by metric domain, project, and billing account. Google Cloud system metrics collected at their standard resolution are generally non-chargeable, while custom, external, workload, and user-defined logs-based metrics can be billed by bytes ingested. Do not estimate Monitoring cost from dashboard count: dashboards read existing time series and do not determine ingestion volume.

For byte-metered metrics, monthly volume depends on the number of active time series, data points, and value type. A scalar data point and a distribution data point use different billable byte assumptions. Check the current Google Cloud Observability pricing page for the free allotment and tiered rates before turning the model into a budget.

Count Prometheus samples before changing scrape intervals

Managed Service for Prometheus is metered by samples ingested rather than bytes. Estimate monthly samples as active time series multiplied by samples per minute and minutes per month, then apply the current sample-based pricing tiers. High-cardinality labels can create many time series even when the number of metric names looks small.

Reduce unused collectors, unnecessary labels, and overly frequent scraping only after confirming which signals support alerts or incident investigation. Use metric relabeling and collection filters deliberately, and compare equivalent traffic periods after a change so lower ingestion is not confused with lower workload.

Add checks, synthetic monitors, and query paths

An uptime check is charged per execution, and each selected checker region executes separately. Synthetic monitors have their own execution allowance and rate, and the function, logging, storage, or network resources they invoke can add service charges. Multiply check frequency by checker locations and days in the month instead of counting check configurations alone.

Monitoring API reads outside the Google Cloud console can also be billable based on time series returned. Inventory Grafana, command-line tools, scheduled reports, and custom integrations that query Monitoring. Track ingestion and query-attribution metrics, set a billing threshold, and validate every estimate against the latest official pricing because rates and effective dates can change.
